“The group’s smooth synthesis of classic Texas guitar courtesy of Funderburgh, and Delta-influenced Chicago harp, courtesy of Myers, remains one of the most successful sounds of the blues. . . .” -Pulse!

“Live [they] are a hard act to beat.” --Chicago Defender

Change in My Pocket s affords blues fans an opportunity to hear one of the finest working blues bands in the country (over 200 live performances per year) as they get down to the serious business of cutting a record. And what a record! Collaborating on half a dozen new tunes and handpicking the rest, the Rockets have created a genuine, destined-to-be-classic album of Texas- and Delta-infused blues.

A lead guitarist in the "less is more" school, Anson Funderburgh avoids the sort of pointless soloing which might ruin an otherwise great blues song. He routinely switches to playing rhythm, and lets the spotlight shine on the talents of an impeccable band. The Rockets are drummer Danny Cochran, the band’s dependable anchor for some nine years; upright bassist J.P. Whitefield (check out his cohesive and subtle playing on the bands’ version of Jimmy Rogers’ classic "What Have I Done"), and keyboardist John Street (the Rockets’ newest member), who shows off impressive skills on both the Hammond B3 and the piano. (Note the funky “barbecue organ” sound on Anson's "Hula-Hoop" or Street’s piano playing on the group’s cover of Willie Dixon's "Young Fashioned Ways.")

Sam "The Deacon of the Delta" Myers is a one of the great bluesmen of his generation. A natural born storyteller, Sam can captivate an audience merely by introducing the band, and his mid-performance sermons are legendary. He complements his pitch-perfect vocals with a gruff, down ‘n’ dirty (and often eerie) approach to harmonica playing, which fairly drips of deep Mississippi despair.

The Rockets are beloved by a devoted fan base that has followed them for nearly 20 years. The band’s perseverance and hard work has been recognized by the industry as well: they’ve won eight W.C. Handy Awards, in such categories as Blues Band of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year. The Rockets practically live in America's blues clubs and juke joints, and Change in My Pocket bristles with all the authority, excitement and crowd-pleasing expertise only a seasoned live band such as the Rockets possess. The album, recorded at Arlyn Studio in Austin, Texas, took less than a week to lay down, yet it ticks with the same precision as one of Anson's vintage watches.

So sit back and relax (if you can!) -- or get up and groove - Change in My Pocket is Anson, Sam and the Rockets at the top of their game.
